Why Chan Chan is special
Chan Chan is the largest adobe city of the ancient Americas and the capital of the Chimú — a coastal empire the Inca only absorbed around 1470. Its walls, courts and ocean-carved friezes of fish, waves and seabirds spread across some 20 square kilometres near the Pacific. It's one of the most important, and most fragile, ancient sites in South America.
The practicalities of the day
Chan Chan is only about 5 km from Trujillo, so it's an easy trip — but the site is earthen and vast, and best seen with a guide. Most people visit on a half- or full-day tour that handles transport and entrances, often bundling Huanchaco and the Moche temples into the same outing.
Go guided
More than at most sites, a guide matters here: much of Chan Chan is weathered adobe that's easy to under-read without context. A good guide brings Nik An's friezes and courts — and the story of the Chimú — to life. It's the single biggest thing that makes the visit worthwhile.
Come prepared, and add Huanchaco
Dress for open coast — hat, sunscreen, water, comfortable shoes — and pace yourself. If you can, choose a tour that adds Huanchaco, minutes away, for its reed boats and ceviche by the Pacific. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before means you can lock in a date now and adjust later.
